RUS 095 SPEAK RUSSIAN (1 credit)

ABOUT COURSE CONTENT

Course Description
RUS 095 is an introductory course designed to develop initial speaking confidence within the framework of modest vocabulary and minimal grammar.

Goals and Competencies
*    Create oral discourse, with limited vocabulary and grammar.
*    Engage in spontaneous, unmemorized speech.
*    Orally communicate with confidence and ease.
*    Orally form sentences of increasing complexity.
*    Develop skills to comprehend natural spoken discourse as well as possible without knowing all the words.
*    Develop skills to read a text without artificial aids (for example, vocabulary lists) and to "guess in context".
*    Write original dialogues or connected narratives.

Attendance
Students are to attend all class meetings, arrive on time, and be prepared; regular attendance and full classroom participation are required for successful completion of the course.  In accordance with college policy, students who have more than one unofficial absence may be withdrawn from class. (Consult your class schedule or catalogue for a list of Official Absences; students must notify the instructor in advance of an absence for official college activities).

RUS 101 ELEMENTARY RUSSIAN I (4 credits)

ABOUT COURSE CONTENT

Course Description
RUS 101 focuses on the basic grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary of the Russian language. Students practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

Goals and Competencies
*      Use Russian in basic survival situations such as greetings; expressing basic needs, attitudes, and emotions; exchanging
         information; socializing; persuading.
*      Show a reasonable level of acceptable pronunciation so as to be easily understood by a native speaker.
*      Use the Cyrillic alphabet in reading and writing.
*      Write lists, short descriptions, narratives, and guided compositions.
*      Understand simple, nonliterary prose on familiar topics.
*      Apply Russian grammatical rules, including, among others:
          --present tense
          --gender distinction
          --case distinction in nouns, adjectives, and pronouns

Troika and accompanying Workbook, by Marita Nummikoski (John Wiley & Sons, 1996).

*    Students who accumulate more than four (4) unofficial absences may be withdrawn from class. (See the class schedule of catalogue

*    Students who arrive late have been marked as absent and must speak to the instructor after class to assure that their mark of
      "absent" is changed to one of "tardy."  Three late arrivals are the equivalent of one absence.

Course Requirements:  All assigned material is to be prepared on a daily basis. Unless students are told otherwise, all written assignment for a given lesson will be turned in to the instructor at the time of the test on that lesson.

Course Description
Continued study of  the basic grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary of the Russian language, with emphasis on speaking, reading,  and writing skills. Prerequisites--RUS 101 or departmental approval.

Goals and Competencies
*      Use Russian in basic survival situations such as greetings; expressing basic needs, attitudes, and emotions; exchanging
         information; socializing; persuading.
*      Show a reasonable level of acceptable pronunciation so as to be easily understood by a native speaker.
*      Use the Cyrillic alphabet in reading and writing.
*      Write lists, short descriptions, narratives, and guided compositions.
*      Understand simple, nonliterary prose on familiar topics.
*      Apply Russian grammatical rules, including, among others:
          --verbal aspect
          --present, past, and future tenses
          --gender distinction
          --all cases, nouns, adjectives, and pronouns

RUS 115Conversational Russian (3 credits)

Department of Foreign Languages           RUS 115, Section 6222, T-R, 5:30 -6:45 p.m., HTA 2 Glendale Community College                    Fall 2001

Course Description:  Basic sentence structure, pronunciation, and vocabulary necessary to develop speaking and listening skills.   Students will also be able to read and write in Russian using the Cyrillic alphabet.  Prerequisites:  none.

Attendance Policy:  Because of the participatory nature of foreign-language instruction, class attendance is extremely important.  After two (2) unofficial absences, (i.e., absences totaling the number of times the class meets per week), the instructor will withdraw you from the course.  Official absences are defined by the college as:  “Those which occur when students are involved in an official activity of the college, i.e., field trips, tournaments, athletic events, and present an official absence excuse form.”  Other official absences include jury duty and subpoenas; death of an immediate family member; and religious holidays.  Appropriate documentation will be required and prior arrangements must be made with each instructor for make-up work.  See page 50 in your GCC Student Handbook.  If you know that you will be absent, please notify the instructor so that he/she can provide you with the necessary homework assignments or materials.  It is also a good idea to have the phone number of a fellow student so that you can call him/her to find out what you missed.

Evaluation Procedures: Grading Scale: 
Quizzes (15) 20 points each       300 90% - 100%     =          A
Tests (7) 100 points each          700  80% - 89%       =          B  
Final Exam                                 200 70% - 79%       =          C
60% - 69%                D
Below 60%       =          F

A grade of I (Incomplete) is only given in very special situations and must be approved by the instructor.

Audio Taping of Lectures:  Lectures may be taped for personal use.  All rights are reserved by the instructor.

Your grades will be posted on INFORM, a college-wide electronic gradebook.  At any time during the semester, you can check your posted grades at a terminal just inside the west entrance to High Tech Center 1 (HTC-1) on the upper concourse or at the small control desk near the west entrance of High Tech Center 2 (HTC-2).  Log in with your ID number.  Select this course (RUS115).  You will see the grades posted to date.  You can also print a copy of your scores.
